Nail Trends NYFW 2014

This year at New York Fashion Week showcased a lot of different trends, from fierce, strong brows and tight slicked back top knots to simple, natural makeup and textured “just out of bed” ponytails. We were given a wide range of trends to test out this season. But what we are interested in is the top nail trends for the upcoming season.

While the majority of the time the hair and makeup were exaggerated and made as more of a statement, the manicures on these models were simple and perfect. Designers seemed to be following the “Keep It Simple Stupid (K.I.S.S.)” rule this season with understated manicures that we have come to love.

The nails were made to complement, not compete, with the garments. At the Nanette Lepore show, models wore short, opaque white nails by Essie. Blanc was used as a base to make the color of the clothing pop. This gave the natural nail a soft but elegantly modern look.

Milly and Lela Rose not only played with colors, but also a new twist on basic designs. Milly and Lela Rose show included colorful half moon nail designs. This look was achieved by covering the nail with a neutral base color, for this show the designers chose a sheer nude for the base. Then, the natural moon at the base of each nail was enhanced by a pop of color. This look takes a skilled hand, but is perfect for a fun night out or a weekend vacation.

Wes Gordon also put a new spin on a classic style, a colorful French manicure. This specific look was achieved by using the two contrasting colors of lilac and a sandy taupe color. The best part of this look is the endless color creations. Play around with bold, fun and simple colors whatever fits your personality. While very understated, this colorful French manicure gives off an air of fun, playfulness and versatility to any look.
